about

Webcast originally on the NCN webcast stream on June 25, 2023, this is a collage / compilation / media mix having to do with the Oceangate submersible craft maritime tragedy that took place in June of 2023 at the site of the original sinking of the ocean liner the RMS Titanic which originally took place in April of 1912.

5 lives were lost, including that of the CEO of the Oceangate company hosting the tour, Stockton Rush, in sightseeing deepsea dive tour to the original Titanic wreck on the ocean floor due to catastrophic decompression of the experimental submersible craft, a ship that some say was unsafe. Much controversy surrounds the company at the time of this mix's creation in the wake of this tragedy.

The (technically a) 'submersible' was missing at sea for some days garnering much attention, some of it cynical, before it was discovered, or revealed, what had happened.

The mix also, in part, takes a look at the practice of 'disaster tourism' in general which the ill-fated mission could be said to be a part.

The mix documents a lot of the media controversies surrounding this incident at the time it happened and includes related cultural touchstones such as remixes of the Thomas Dolby techno-pop song from 1982 titled 'One of Our Submarines (Is Missing)' as well as sequential segments of the radio play 'A Sound of Thunder' based on a science-fiction short story by Ray Bradbury. A lot of excerpts of the dark comedy from the show of comedian Tim Dillon (some musically remixed by NCN) are also presented in the mix, particularly in the final hour.

The Tim Dillon Show is on Youtube at:

www.youtube.com/@TimDillonShow

On a personal note, this mix is the result of my artistically working out my thoughts and feelings about this tragedy at the time it has happened.

The total running time of this album/mix program is: 5 hours, 50 minutes and 8 seconds.

This show also exists at our (National Cynical Network/Phineas Network) SoundCloud, archive.org and Mixcloud:

The Soundcloud version differs from other online versions in that a spoken word piece by Jim Morrison, appearing early on is disincluded.

PRO TIPS on how to listen to this program:

- Use headphones
- Take breaks. This is a long program. It is not necessarily meant to be 'consumed' all in one sitting. Think of NCN 'mega-album' programs not so much as traditional 'albums', but more like eclectic, collated 'sonic photo albums' or 'audiobooks with music'. The best place to take breaks is when you hear an NCN 'Station ID' which identifies that you are listening to The National Cynical Network. This usually signifies that a temporal, or thematic change is taking place in the program.
- If you are listening to the program in tracked form (as it is offered on Bandcamp) then you should make sure that you are listening to the tracks in the numbered order and with GAPLESS PLAYBACK i.e. there should be no pause or blank space between tracks. If you do not listen to the program with gapless playback you are not getting the best and intended effect.
- Be sure that the 'mp3 gain' setting is checked on your digital player if you're listening to it on an mp3 player or on the computer in order to avoid any big jumps in volume or 'gain' that might be uncomfortable. NCN is a collage art enterprise and we're dealing with a lot of different audio sources here with different loudness levels. While we have done our best and made every effort to provide a comfortable listening experience, we are not professionals.
- Try listening to it in the background while working on the computer or even on long trips, like on an airplane or bus ride. The way these and other NCN programs are constructed (we find) is that they are both effective as a mental sonic 'wallpaper', because of the dynamic richness in form, but also rewarding listens if you also devote your entire attention to them, due to the crisp and compelling nature of the content and its sequences.

This program is also available at Phineas Narco/National Cynical Network's pages at SoundCloud, Mixcloud and archive.org in all-in-one-file formats. Bandcamp proscribes linking to these pages here, so you will have to look them up to find them.

Happy Listening!
